Background of the Study

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition that can develop after exposure to traumatic events. In Adamawa State, ongoing conflicts and displacement have resulted in a significant population of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are at high risk for developing PTSD. IDPs often experience multiple traumas, including violence, loss of loved ones, and the breakdown of community support systems. Research shows that PTSD can lead to long-term psychological distress, impairing an individual’s ability to function and recover (Ibrahim, 2024; Bello, 2024). Despite the evident need for mental health support among IDPs, access to appropriate services is frequently hampered by limited resources, stigma, and inadequate infrastructure. This study will investigate the prevalence and severity of PTSD among IDPs in Adamawa State, exploring its impact on daily functioning, social relationships, and overall well-being. Using a combination of standardized PTSD screening tools and qualitative interviews, the research aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the mental health challenges faced by displaced populations and inform interventions to support their recovery.

Statement of the Problem

Internally displaced persons in Adamawa State face extraordinary challenges as a result of prolonged exposure to traumatic events, leading to a high prevalence of PTSD. Despite the critical need for mental health care, many IDPs lack access to adequate support services due to resource constraints, social stigma, and logistical barriers. The resulting untreated PTSD has profound effects on their ability to reintegrate into society, maintain employment, and rebuild their lives. Furthermore, the mental health burden among IDPs remains underdocumented, hindering the development of targeted interventions and resource allocation. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically assessing the impact of PTSD on IDPs in Adamawa State, providing empirical data that can guide mental health services and policy responses for this vulnerable population.

Objectives of the Study

1. To determine the prevalence of PTSD among IDPs in Adamawa State.

2. To evaluate the impact of PTSD on the daily functioning and social well-being of IDPs.

3. To propose strategies for improving mental health support for displaced populations.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of PTSD among IDPs in Adamawa State?

2. How does PTSD affect the quality of life and social functioning of IDPs?

3. What interventions can alleviate PTSD symptoms and support recovery among IDPs?

Research Hypotheses

1. A significant proportion of IDPs in Adamawa State exhibit clinical symptoms of PTSD.

2. Higher PTSD severity is associated with greater impairment in daily functioning and social interactions.

3. Integrated mental health interventions will significantly reduce PTSD symptoms among IDPs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on IDP camps and communities in Adamawa State. Data will be collected through standardized questionnaires, clinical interviews, and focus groups. Limitations include potential recall bias, challenges in accessing remote IDP sites, and cultural factors influencing self-reporting.
